Back Street Dumfries

A little photowalk near to the Nith in Dumfries. Taken on an Ilford disposable.

This photo walk around Dumfries documents a mix of the town’s familiar landmarks and its overlooked industrial corners. Shot on half-frame with Ilford Delta, the sequence gives a fragmented, almost archival perspective, where each frame captures textures and structures that tell a story of both use and decline. From the frontage of The Lochar pub, still carrying its signage proudly, to the shuttered warehouses and fading advertisements, the images form a record of places that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The choice of black-and-white film emphasizes the character of Dumfries’ brickwork, corrugated doors, and weathered stone. Detail in peeling paint, boarded windows, and rusted metalwork points towards the shifting life of the town’s built environment; what was once in daily use now standing as a reminder of earlier activity. Together, these photographs serve less as a romanticized view of Dumfries and more as a straightforward visual survey, grounding the walk in observation and atmosphere.
